No NEC meetings took place in April. The next full NEC meeting is 17th May - send me your questions for the Labour leadership team here: http://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/6PMUH/ Campaigning I’ve been out on the doorstep this month campaigning for some fantastic candidates ahead of the local elections! I've been campaigning with young members in London, Wales and Merseyside this month.
you’ll get the hang of it and enjoy every second! It’s the best way to get involved and secure Labour gains. Young Labour Induction Day On 8th April the newly elected Young Labour committee had an induction day in London! We had introductions from the National Youth Officer and then I talked a bit about the youth review which was about to be released to members. The Head of Labour in for Britain then came in to give us a talk about the important role young members will play in the EU referendum campaign. With only two months to go until the country votes on whether or not to leave the EU we have a lot of work to do to ensure the UK makes the right decision for our future and the future of all young people in the UK. Members of the Young Labour committee then split off into groups and discussed their individual plans for the next two years which was a useful exercise to be able to think about priorities. Young Labour National Committee Meeting We had a national Young Labour committee meeting straight after the induction day. It was great to finally meet everyone and put faces to names. We did introductions and I presented my March NEC report to the committee and answered any questions on it. Next we elected the roles of Vice Chair Campaigns and Assistant Secretary, both votes were unanimous - so congrats to Charlotte and Sabrina! Next on the agenda was national conference, a lot of exciting ideas were floated about around how we do the infamous youth day at annual conference this year. There is a lot to plan and discuss so make sure you buy your pass and watch this space! We then talked about upcoming campaigns such as the May elections, the EU referendum and refugee solidarity. Young members have always played an important role in getting Labour candidates elected across the country with their commitment to campaigning, we must all come together to get out on the doorstep to ensure we make a difference in May. Under 19s officer, Asher Mohammed then presented the findings of his ‘Under 19s Survey’. It was a really well put together survey and its allowed under 19s members put across their ideas and concerns for Young Labour. Having joined the party at 15 I understand that it can be difficult being involved at such a young age, whether that be because socials are often held in pubs or you’re unable to book a hotel at a conference. The Labour Party must look after its under 19s members and this is something we must look closely at within the youth review. Finally, we discussed a great idea for a Young Labour journal, put forward by West Midlands rep, Rida Vaquas for a Young Labour magazine. The committee agreed it was a good idea to keep members up to date and informed and will be contributed to by young members from across the country. Labour Party Youth Review On 15th April, Tom Watson launched the party’s youth review, this falls under the wider party structures review: ‘our party: made by members’. Members voted for a new kind of politics and that is exactly what this youth review aims to deliver. It is an NEC led process and as your voice on the NEC I want to work with Young Labour and all other youth groups within our party to ensure young members views are at the forefront of any changes we make to these structures. There are three ways in which you young members can take part in this consultation: 1 – Complete this online survey: http://www.labour.org.uk/page/s/engaging-young-members 2 – Take part in one of our regional consultations which are being organised: http://www.labour.org.uk/page/content/engaging-young-members-events/ 3 – Organise your own local discussion based on this discussion paper (http://www.labour.org.uk/page/-/Youth-Consultation-discussion-paper.pdf) - then email responses to [email protected] I’ll be working with groups across the party to ensure all young members get a chance to have their say and so I can represent your voice on the NEC! If you’ve got any questions about the process drop me an email. NW Regional Consultation On 25th April we had our first regional consultation meeting for the youth review, in the North West! Myself and Leigh (NW rep on the YL committee) rotated the groups and took notes of young members ideas and opinions on Labour’s youth structures. Members came from across the region and Deputy Labour group leader Cllr Paul Brant came and spoke. We had a lot of interesting discussion and I’m looking forward to facilitating more of these events. NUS conference From 19th – 21st April I attended NUS conference to campaign for some fantastic Labour candidates who were standing for election. It was a great experience and we had a great team of campaigners. There are national campaigns to disaffiliate to the NUS but I’d urge everyone to stay in. You can’t change something if you are not a part of it so if you want to change the NUS stay in and get involved! Students are one of the groups being hit hardest by Tory cuts and we must ensure the NUS is united to fight the government on the issues that matter. If you have any questions about my report or anything raised in it please get in touch with me. Jasmin The next full NEC meeting is Tuesday 17th May, again I am crowdsourcing questions from young members to put to Jeremy Corbyn and Tom Watson.
