Hello everyone!! I’m standing to be the Labour NEC Youth Rep and one of my main aims is to ensure that my manifesto is your manifesto. I want to make Young Labour a more accessible and democratic movement, not one that is top-down and inward-looking! I therefore don’t want to write my manifesto without asking young members what you want from young labour! Every young labour group, labour students club and each trade union youth section is different so it is important that I talk to a wide range of members from different areas to ensure my manifesto takes into account all young member’s views, not just those I know. I want to hear everything from how you would want me to represent you on the NEC, how Young Labour could make it easier for young people to get involved and why you joined the party. Young members with their ideas at one of my Trade Union engagement events!A key thing I have been working hard on is getting more Young Labour members joining trade unions whilst trying to make Young Labour more welcoming and accessible for young trade unionists. I have held consultation events across the country with young members on this topic and already have pages of notes and ideas from members on how I could do this! As well as looking at how we can improve our youth movement we must not just focus on the negatives but also the amazing work various Young Labour groups do across the country! Sharing best practice is something I feel we don’t do enough of in Young Labour therefore I also want to hear the things you think your group does well, so I can look at how we can ensure this is shared with other groups to make Young Labour the strongest left-wing youth movement it can be. In Wirral Young Labour we won the best practice award in 2013 from Iain McNicol for putting on a production of the socialist play ‘The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists’ raising thousands for charity and our hardship fund. Each week London Young Labour hold policy forums where they debate all types of policy with members across the region. And unless I had visited I wouldn’t have known about the fantastic get togethers East Midlands Young Labour have to engage new members! This must change, I want to ensure we start sharing best practice wherever possible and celebrating the amazing work Young Labour groups do. I have travelled around the country to find out what young members think could be done to improve our movement and I will continue to do this whilst writing my manifesto. If elected as your NEC rep I will make it a priority to constantly meet different Young Labour groups to ensure I am keeping in touch with member’s ideas and concerns! But for those who I won’t get the chance to talk to I still want you to be able to have this input into my manifesto! I have therefore created a survey (link below) with various questions around Young Labour and how we can make it more accessible. Please fill it in and share it with people in your area or Young Labour group so I can get as many people having input as possible — I want your ideas to be at the heart of my manifesto, because your ideas will be at the heart of everything I do as your NEC rep. Any other questions in the meantime please feel free to message me on Facebook or drop me an email at: [email protected] Survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1HvX4zgdUUDju0uYH0PQ17yi7FwymBCCPCEyMwX_UQP8/viewform Jas
