A key reason why I am standing for NEC Youth Rep is because I want Young Labour to become a grassroots, campaigning force for change! In the past Young Labour has been crucial in election wins across the country. This is because when times get tough for our party Young Labour are always the pioneers to take control and get out on the doorstep in their masses. We are the ones who lead the fight back against the cruel Tory government by getting out there and talking to voters. I want to create a campaigning Young Labour as I don’t want to see us lose in 2020. I want our party to get into power so that we can help the people who so desperately need a Labour Government. Too often have I been on the doorstep and I have had people telling me heart breaking stories about why they don’t think they will be able to survive another 5 years of the cruel Conservatives who are implementing the bedroom tax, taking away their tax credits and cutting benefits of those who need them most. These are the people the Labour Party was set up to protect and by getting out on the doorstep we can ensure we are doing everything we can to make that a reality. I have campaigned in all conditions from boiling hot July afternoon’s, torrential rain and thick snow. On all of these campaign days when your natural instinct isn’t to go outside and campaign Young Labour have been there with me and we must build on this tradition. In June 2013 Wirral West selected Margaret Greenwood to take on Tory minister Esther McVey in the general election. From that first campaign day on the Woodchurch estate Wirral Young Labour took the lead in every single campaign event organised until May 7th when we were one of the only seats in the country to have a Labour gain. I was involved in coordinating the Wirral West campaign and organised ’31 Days for 2015’ where members of Merseyside Young Labour campaigned twice every day for the whole of August making thousands of contacts. When we saw we’d beat Esther McVey by just under 600 votes we realised we may have secured that win. This is an example of Young Labour making history. In the 2014 Heywood and Middleton by-election Labour’s Liz McInnes won by only 617 votes after an unsuspecting UKIP surge shocked us. Young Labour members and Labour Students were brought in from around the country to knock doors and convince voters that they could do better than UKIP. Another example of Young Labour changing history. We have the chance to change once again, the Oldham West and Royton by-election is just 3 weeks away, we have 3 weeks to prevent UKIP from taking a solid Labour seat. That is why I want to help get as many young members as possible to Oldham over the next few weeks and on polling day on the 3rd December. In 2020 we must keep hold of seats like Oldham to show that the Labour Party can win and Jeremy will be Prime Minister! So please come along to one of the campaign days and play your part in helping me make Young Labour a campaigning Young Labour that makes a real difference to the lives of those who need Labour the most.
